They range in price from a couple of hundred pounds up to about six hundred or so for a very ornate one made from solid oak. The great thing about wood is that it is full of character yet never demands too much attention so a wooden fireplace will blend beautifully into the background while still lending lots of charm to the room. Colour wise, wood works well with pretty much everything, so you won’t be limited to painting the walls something simple like cream or ivory. Have a bit of fun and place a solid oak fireplace against a deep red or rich green wall for lots of impact.

If you have a bit more money to spend and want your fireplace to be a real feature in your room then why not splash out on a marble fireplace. Marble is an elegant, regal material that looks fantastic with simple understated furnishings and pale colours. It works well with either wooden floors or cream/stone coloured carpets but can look a bit out of place with lots of bright patterns or very modern furnishings. Price wise, marble fireplaces tend to range from about five or six hundred pounds up to a thousand, so it is a bit more of an investment. However, it’s durable, looks fantastic and is definitely worth the money.
